John started being involved in the Tuna industry in the Solomon Islands when he partnered with 4 other young Solomon Islanders to establish Solomon Islands Shipping and Transport Ltd in 2009. This is a shipping and crewing agency company servicing foreign fishing vessels in Honiara and Noro Ports, in the Solomon Islands. The company is the agency for some of the biggest fishing companies from Japan, USA, Taiwan and the Philippines, operating in the Pacific.
John was the Operations Manager for SI Shipping and Transport from 2009 to 2015 before joining the Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association as its Executive Officer (2016 to 2019). He is passionate about the development of the domestic industry in the Pacific Islands and about giving opportunities for Pacific Islanders to participate in the industry and has been advocating for improved working conditions for labour conditions on the fishing vessels.
John recently began training in Social Accountability auditing under the Social Accountability International (SAI) SA8000 Standard. He has joined Terra Moana as an Associate to develop this work with them in the Pacific.
