Taking our expertise, knowledge and sustainable success to the world

Terra Moana provided an invaluable service for Austral Fisheries, allowing us to be at the forefront as a seafood business in the global social movement for decent work and conditions. They carried out a comprehensive review of our crewing arrangements, outlining international trends and advising us on how we can implement arrangements in line with Sustainable Development Goals.

This has enabled us to future-proof the business, with creation of new policy structures, crewing arrangements, audits, and transparency to ensure we are a leader in doing the right thing.

Terra Moana’s review was pivotal for Moana - not only in the findings, with the revelation of the impact of sedimentation from forestry on the health of the marine environment/pāua – but in enabling diverse groups to come together to work on an integrated approach.

Improving Ocean Literacy in Aotearoa New Zealand is collaborative a workshop summary report compiled by Katherine Short with input from partner organisations. The workshop was delivered at the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society July 2021 conference.  It reflects on the value of bringing together experienced practitioners to deepen the conversation about what Ocean Literacy should mean in Aotearoa New Zealand

Department of Conservation

The 2015-2016 national natural capital assessment secretariat for the Natural Resource Sector (NRS) was coordinated by Terra Moana and led by Associate, Rebecca Bird.

Rebecca  was the project director for the scoping of the New Zealand Natural Capital Assessment, working with the government Natural Resources Sector (NRS). This work led to the new NRS project:  "Capturing the Value of Nature in Decisions Making" project.

Falkland Islands Government

Terra Moana successfully bid to the Falkland Island Government to provide policy advice on their Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) System.

Terra Moana partner, Tony Craig led the work on this project with support from partner, Katherine Short and Strategic Partner, Michael Harte. We provided a suite of consolidated reports for the review and investment analysis of the Falkland Islands Quota Management System. These included an independent review of the ITQ system, a seafood sector financial investment update, an international best practices paper and an evaluation of policy alternatives for the Falkland Islands ITQ system.

Goverment of Kiribati

As a follow-on from a previous MFAT project in Kiribati, Terra Moana partner, Tony Craig was contracted to return to Kiribati by the Government of Kiribati to host a series of workshops to provide technical assistance, especially in the design, formulation, development and implementation of a Capitalisation Framework of the Kiribati Party Allowable Effort (PAE) Rents of the Purse Seine Vessel Day Scheme, including submission of a Comparative Scoping Paper on Capitalisation of Kiribati PAE Rents versus Wealth Creation and Asset Protection.

Ngai Tahu Seafood

Tony Craig’s ability to work with people across different cultural backgrounds was what attracted Ngai Tahu Seafoods to contract Terra Moana to provide two key reviews working with both their management and fishing team. This was a review of the Annual Catch Entitlement (ACE) to measure and assess Ngai Tahu Seafoods approach to annual lease arrangements and revenue streams. The review considered fiscal and social benefits for Ngai Tahu Iwi members of various options. Additionally, a fleet review was undertaken which focused on the relationships and utilisation of annual quota leases through third party purchase arrangements to Ngai Tahu fishermen in the finfish (wetfish) sector. It also analysed fisher confidence, profitability and support needs.
